This morning as I was walking into my local juice shop, I noticed an older man sitting at a table outside. I smiled as I passed by. Suddenly, he yelled out in voice that felt like sandpaper “Did you get chemo?”

A year ago, his question would have floored me. Today, it caught me off guard, but I took a deep breath and calmly replied “no, I did not!” and smiled again as I walked inside.
✨
As I waited for my juice, I smiled and thought about how in the past, an off handed comment like that could have rocked me to my core and ruined my whole day. It could have triggered a complete spiral - “I am not sick!” “Do I look sick?” “How dare he speak to me like that” “Am I a freak?” “Maybe I should just turn around and go home” “I am ugly” “I am awful.”

... but today, that is not what happened. I felt a tiny flush of heat in my chest, I breathed into it, and let it go. In my mind I thought, that wasn’t a very sensitive question, but took myself down a different path: “Funny he should ask that!” “I am healthy, I am beautiful, I am love.” There was nothing in his question for me to take personally or get upset about unless I chose to. And when I chose to remember love, I remained at peace.

As I walked out of the juice shop, he was still sitting there. As I walked by and smiled, he yelled out again in his gruff old man voice, “I hope I didn’t come off as rude before! I was asking because I wanted to tell you how beautiful you are.”
✨
And just like that, the love I felt within of me, was reflected in the world around me.
✨
